Union Bank of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to women and youth empowerment through its alpher initiative. The Bank sponsored the second cohort of the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC)’s Women and Youth Entrepreneurship Development Centre (WYEDC), which successfully graduated 125 entrepreneurs. These participants received hands-on training and access to startup grants.

Since SMEs contribute nearly 48% to Nigeria’s GDP and employ over half of the industrial workforce, empowering this sector is essential. Union Bank’s collaboration with NBCC reflects a shared goal: building a stronger and more inclusive economy.

NBCC Celebrates Vision, Encourages Long-Term Impact

During the graduation ceremony, NBCC Director General, Dr. Ebere Njoku, applauded the dedication of sponsors, partners, and facilitators. She emphasized the Chamber’s unwavering support for women and youth, describing them as vital drivers of economic transformation.

The initiative began with the vision of NBCC President Mr. Ray Atelly, FRPA, who urged graduates to stay resilient. “Obstacles will come, but your dreams must be stronger. Keep moving forward until others aspire to be like you,” he encouraged.

Senator Akin Odunsi, FRPA, NBCC Patron, also addressed the graduates. He advised them to value the training received and suggested adding internships to future cohorts. According to him, this practical experience would help trainees implement what they’ve learned and also contribute to host organizations.

Union Bank Pledges Ongoing Support Through alpher

Mrs. Vivian Imoh-Ita, Union Bank’s Head of Retail and SME Business, delivered a goodwill message on behalf of CEO Mrs. Yetunde Oni. She commended NBCC’s role in providing transformative opportunities for women and youth.

“When we invest in entrepreneurs, we invest in Nigeria’s future. Through the alpher initiative, Union Bank is removing barriers and creating business success stories,” she stated. She added that despite the challenges of the Nigerian economy, the Bank sees each challenge as a stepping stone toward growth.

The highlight of the event was the Union Bank Business Pitch Competition. Evelyn Ekene Ani of Evani.Ng took first place. Martha Padonu of Beyond Photography and Therietta Vershima of La Teriz followed in second and third places, respectively. All three received business funding to help scale their operations.

Clearly, Union Bank’s impact goes far beyond funding. Its support is actively shaping a vibrant and inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem across Nigeria.
