Kano State witnessed a major political shift on Friday as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf officially received prominent defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) into the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
The reception, held at the Government House in Kano, brought together influential politicians and supporters from Dawakin Tofa constituency. According to the Governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the move signaled growing confidence in the current administration.
Governor Yusuf Hails Political Realignment
Governor Yusuf said the mass defection proves his government’s programmes and policies have delivered tangible results over the past two years.
He recalled visiting all 44 local government areas during the 2023 campaign. In Dawakin Tofa, he pledged to deliver democratic dividends to every community.
“Dawakin Tofa is a strategic local government in our political journey,” Yusuf said. “I am delighted by this overwhelming defection from APC to NNPP.”
He thanked NNPP National Leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, for helping strengthen the party and welcoming the new members.
Development Commitments and Integration
Highlighting recent achievements in Dawakin Tofa, the Governor noted the completion of a five-kilometer road abandoned by the previous administration and announced plans for a new school. He assured defectors of full integration into the NNPP without discrimination and cautioned against any form of intimidation.
Yusuf also revealed plans for a pre-2027 election familiarization tour and a policy change for Dawanau International Market, restructuring it into an agency with a Managing Director and governing board for improved management.
Local Government Achievements
The Chairman of Dawakin Tofa Local Government, Hon. Anas Danmaliki, praised the Governor’s leadership, noting the completion of projects in 15 primary schools and sponsorship of over 1,000 students in tertiary institutions. He also lauded the council’s internally generated revenue of N500 million, which funded local projects.
Party Leaders and Defectors React
NNPP State Chairman, Hon. Hashim Dungurawa, congratulated the new members, predicting even stronger support for the Governor in 2027.
Alhaji Ahmad Muhammad Speaker, NNPP leader in Dawakin Tofa, stressed voluntary participation. He also urged the government to complete abandoned projects in Dawanau and Tumfafi wards.
Representatives of the defectors, including Hon. Nura Tumfafi and Hon. Isyaku Dahiru Kwa, praised Governor Yusuf’s achievements in key sectors. They also commended Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa and Chairman Anas Muktar Bello for their service to the people.
