President Bola Tinubu has explained why he appointed Dr. Bosun Tijani as Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, despite his history of criticizing both the President and the National Assembly.
Speaking on Saturday night at a special Iftar held at the Presidential Villa to mark his 73rd birthday, Tinubu said his decision was based on talent and merit, not past differences.
Tijani, who had previously been vocal in his criticism of the government, shared his experience of being chosen by Tinubu despite his controversial past remarks.
“Before my appointment, I had never met Mr. President. But after my confirmation, he told me, ‘I have looked at your records and activism, and I have seen something in you. I am giving you the opportunity to serve your country and make it better,’” Tijani recounted.
He admitted he had expected backlash over his past statements but was instead met with Tinubu’s magnanimity.
“I remember that during our meeting, some people brought up my past comments and told Mr. President, ‘He said this, he did that.’ But the President said, ‘Shut it,’” Tijani recalled.
Senate Resistance and Akpabio’s Revelation
Tinubu confirmed that selecting Tijani was a tough call, as many of his close allies objected due to the minister’s past social media remarks.
“When I picked him, it was difficult. Some of my confidantes, who had read his comments online, told me, ‘No, never.’ But I said, ‘Yes, he is talented. Criticism does not mean he has nothing to offer. Perhaps his frustration back then will drive him to contribute more now.’ And today, I am very proud of him,” Tinubu said.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio also highlighted the resistance Tijani faced during his ministerial confirmation.
“When he appeared before the Senate, many senators opposed him. One even read from the internet where he had described Nigerian senators as ‘morons,’” Akpabio said.
He recalled how Tijani admitted to making the statement, prompting Akpabio to ask, “And you have the audacity to stand before us and expect confirmation?”
However, Akpabio said the Senate ultimately approved Tijani’s nomination because of their confidence in Tinubu’s judgment.
“Mr. President, we confirmed him because we trusted your decision. And today, he is one of the best-performing ministers in the cabinet,” Akpabio added.
