Hon. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha, who represents Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has officially left the Labour Party (LP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC). He made the announcement during Thursday’s plenary session and followed it up with a letter to his constituents explaining the reasons behind his decision.

According to Umeha, the worsening leadership crisis within the Labour Party pushed him to seek a more stable political platform. After consulting with political allies, community leaders, and supporters across Enugu State and the diaspora, he decided that joining the APC was the best way to protect his constituents’ interests.

Labour Party Has Lost Its Way

Umeha expressed deep concern over the direction the Labour Party has taken in recent months. Once viewed as a rising force in Nigerian politics, he said the party is now paralyzed by internal disputes and lacks credible leadership at both national and state levels.

“Remaining in such a party would sabotage everything we’ve worked hard to build,” he stated. “It’s not about ambition, it’s about responsibility.”

While he thanked the LP for providing him with a platform, Umeha said the party no longer reflects the ideals that once made it appealing to Nigerians. He emphasized that his loyalty remains with the people who elected him, not with a political structure in decline.

Umeha believes joining the APC will allow him to better serve the people of Udi/Ezeagu and the entire South East region. He pointed to the establishment of the South East Development Commission as evidence of the APC-led federal government’s commitment to the region’s growth.

Moreover, he argued that being part of the ruling party puts him in a stronger position to advocate for projects and policies that benefit his constituency.

“Connecting Enugu to the centre means opening doors for meaningful development,” he said. “This move gives me the tools to deliver on our legislative agenda.”

He also extended gratitude to key APC figures who supported his transition. These include Hon. Uche Nnaji, Hon. Emeka Emeukwu, Hon. Ugochukwu Agballa, and the National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Additionally, he praised Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, for his leadership within the Progressives Governors Forum.

Renewed Focus on Service

Despite the party switch, Umeha assured constituents that his core mission remains unchanged. He promised to continue pushing for progress, transparency, and good governance in Enugu State and across Nigeria.

“No matter the party, I remain your representative,” he declared. “My priority has always been, and will always be, your well-being.”

Umeha’s defection marks a significant moment in Enugu politics. It also reflects a broader trend of politicians in the South East seeking stronger ties with the federal government ahead of the 2027 elections.
