Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has stepped down from his role in the cabinet of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, confirmed the resignation.
According to the Ministry, Tuggar resigned to pursue his ambition to contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State.
“The resignation of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs is confirmed,” Ebienfa stated.
The move follows a directive by President Tinubu, mandating all political appointees seeking elective office in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive, issued through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, applies to ministers, special advisers, director-generals, and heads of government agencies, in line with the Electoral Act.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has begun receiving agrément approvals for ambassador-designates.
Ebienfa disclosed that approvals have been received from several countries, including the United Kingdom, France, United States, Ireland, Qatar, Benin Republic, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.
He added that the date for the ambassadors’ induction ceremony will be announced once finalised by the Presidency.
