Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, professionally known as Sabinus, has revealed that his father was initially against his pursuit of a career in comedy.
In a recent interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus explained that his father had hoped he would become a lawyer. After failing to gain admission to study law, he enrolled in Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.
It was during his time at university that Sabinus discovered his passion for comedy and began creating skits. He admitted that in the early stages, he kept his comedic endeavors a secret from his father.
“It was on campus that I discovered skit making and decided to give it a try. At first, there was no income,” Sabinus said. “After I graduated, my dad had no idea I was pursuing comedy. It was only a year later, when he started seeing my name on comedy show posters, that he found out. My sisters confirmed it to him, and he was furious. He said, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.’”
Sabinus’ story highlights the challenges many entertainers face when pursuing unconventional careers, especially when family expectations differ from personal ambitions.
