Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has appealed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, to accept the recent ruling of the Court of Appeal that affirmed his election victory. The court’s judgement, delivered on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, upheld the earlier decision of the election tribunal, confirming the mandate given to Okpebholo by Edo voters.
Governor Okpebholo described the ruling as a reflection of the people’s will and called on Ighodalo to set aside political grievances for the sake of development.
Verdict Validates People’s Choice
The governor, through a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, urged Ighodalo and his supporters to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and support the current administration in its efforts to move Edo State forward.
“This verdict is not just a personal victory or a win for the All Progressives Congress (APC); it is a victory for the democratic process,” Okpebholo said. “The people made their choice, and the judiciary has confirmed it after a fair and thorough review of the facts.”
He noted that the Court of Appeal carefully examined all legal arguments before upholding the decision of the lower tribunal. According to him, this outcome confirms that the electoral process was credible and reflects the wishes of Edo citizens.
Okpebholo acknowledged the judiciary’s role in protecting democracy. He commended the judges for their dedication and described the judiciary as the last hope of the common man.
Governor Okpebholo urged Ighodalo to stop further legal battles and join hands with his administration. He warned that continued litigation would only delay essential governance and slow down progress in critical sectors.
“We cannot afford distractions. Edo people deserve focused leadership and rapid development. Let us shift our energy from courtrooms to communities,” he said.
The governor also took a swipe at Ighodalo’s political backing, claiming that even his former ally, Governor Godwin Obaseki, has distanced himself from the PDP candidate.
“This should send a strong message. Political ambition must give way to collective responsibility. The election is over. Now is the time to work,” Okpebholo added.
Commitment to the ‘People First’ Agenda
Reaffirming his commitment to his “People First” agenda, Okpebholo said his administration would intensify development efforts across the state. He promised continued investment in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and job creation.
“Our government remains committed to delivering practical results. We will expand roads, improve schools, strengthen healthcare, and empower young people,” he stated.
He also called on all Edo residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding. He assured them that his administration would continue to serve every citizen, regardless of political affiliation.
“This judgment has re-energized us. We are more determined than ever to build a better Edo State,” the governor concluded.
