The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has praised President Bola Tinubu for his consistent commitment to national security but raised concerns over the recent uptick in insecurity across the region.
Speaking at a joint meeting of the NSGF and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council held on Saturday in Kaduna, Gombe State Governor and Forum Chairman, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, acknowledged the president’s efforts while calling for an urgent review of current security strategies.
Governor Yahaya highlighted the resurgence of Boko Haram in parts of the North-East and a wave of violent killings in the North-Central, stressing the need for stronger collaboration between federal, state, and local security agencies.
“This meeting comes at a critical time in our region’s history,” Yahaya said. “The challenges we face require collective wisdom and bold, united action.”
The governors extended heartfelt condolences to the governments and people of Plateau, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, and Yobe States over recent tragic attacks that claimed many lives.
“These mindless acts of violence against innocent citizens remind us of the urgent need to double down on security efforts. We must ensure the full implementation of robust measures to protect our people,” he added.
Also speaking at the meeting, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State emphasized the unity and progress fostered by both the Forum and the Council, describing them as vital platforms for consensus and development despite regional diversity.
“Our unity has earned national respect. We must continue in this spirit,” Sani stated.
Governors from Zamfara, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Yobe, Katsina, Jigawa, Plateau, Taraba, Adamawa, Sokoto, Kogi, and others were present at the high-level meeting.
Prominent traditional leaders, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Emir of Zazzau, and Etsu Nupe, also attended. A communiqué is expected at the conclusion of the gathering.
