Lazio have confirmed that Nigerian midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru will stay at the club for the 2025/26 season. Coach Maurizio Sarri is preparing to hand him a crucial role in the team’s midfield setup.
The 24-year-old joined the Biancocelesti last summer from Turkish side Hatayspor in a transfer worth around €6 million. While he did not secure a permanent starting position under former manager Marco Baroni, he still impressed with five goals and three assists across all competitions.
Sarri’s Midfield Plans Shaped by Transfer Ban
Sarri’s return to Lazio comes at a time when the club faces a transfer ban. This restriction has forced the experienced coach to build his plans around existing players. Ideally, Sarri would have preferred a creative midfielder with similar qualities to Luis Alberto, but with no new signings possible, Dele-Bashiru has become an important option.
Strong Displays Earn Sarri’s Trust
According to Italian outlet Il Messaggero, Sarri’s confidence in Dele-Bashiru grew after a standout performance against Burnley. During that match, the Lagos-born player showcased his strength, ball control, and vision. He won possession, shielded the ball from an opponent, and delivered a precise pass to Pedro, which led to Matteo Cancellieri’s winning goal.
Expected Starter in Serie A Opener
Dele-Bashiru is now expected to start in Lazio’s three-man midfield alongside Nicolo Rovella and Matteo Guendouzi in their Serie A opener against Como. Reports indicate that clubs such as Juventus and AC Milan showed interest in signing him earlier this year before changes in their sporting departments.
Newcastle’s Interest Rejected
Newcastle United also explored the possibility of bringing Dele-Bashiru back to England. However, Lazio made it clear that he would not be sold this summer. The club could reconsider their stance next year if his value increases after a strong season under Sarri.
With Sarri reshaping his midfield around him, Dele-Bashiru has the chance to establish himself as one of Serie A’s most influential midfielders in 2025/26.
