The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will reveal its zoning plan for the 2027 general elections on August 25, 2025. The decision is expected to influence key political alignments ahead of the polls.
The party’s official timetable shows that the Zoning Committee, chaired by Bayelsa State Governor Senator Duoye Diri, will meet in Abuja this week to finalize its report. PDP National Organising Secretary Hon. Umar M. Bature signed the schedule, which covers activities from August 24 to December 2025.
According to Section 7(2)(c) of the PDP constitution, elective offices must rotate to ensure equity, justice, and fairness. This principle will guide the new zoning arrangement.
Convention Scheduled for November
The programme concludes with the National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15–16. Before then, activities begin on August 24 with separate meetings of the National Working Committee (NWC) and the National Caucus.
On August 25, the National Executive Committee (NEC) will review and approve the zoning recommendations from the Diri-led team. The timetable also includes ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses to elect party executives. In addition, primary elections will select candidates for upcoming polls.
Party sources confirmed that the zoning committee will meet on Thursday, August 14, to complete its proposal before submitting it to the NEC. The upcoming decision has already triggered political speculation. Political insiders say former President Goodluck Jonathan may return to the race, while Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi may also contest.
PDP Targets Political Comeback
Former PDP National Vice Chairman Eddy Olafeso said the party aims to regain dominance in Nigerian politics.
“We are preparing well to solve the country’s problems. Our position gives us time to plan and connect with Nigerians more effectively,” he said.
Olafeso explained that if the presidency is zoned to the South, the national chairmanship will go to the North. On whether Acting National Chairman Umar Ilya Damagum will contest for the top seat, he noted:
“He has the right to run. The PDP belongs to the people, not one individual.”
With the zoning plan’s unveiling just days away, the PDP is positioning itself for a stronger challenge in the 2027 elections.
