Team New Nigeria (TNN) has raised alarm over alleged pressure from “high quarters” on top officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The group claims these efforts aim to block its registration as a political party in Nigeria.
In a press statement released in Kaduna and signed by TNN’s spokesperson, Dr. Mohammed Adah Shaibu, the group said it applied for registration in 2024. INEC acknowledged receipt of the application on May 27, 2024, but has not taken further action.
INEC’s Silence Raises Questions
Dr. Shaibu expressed frustration with INEC’s delay. He noted that since receiving the application, INEC only sent an acknowledgment letter. The letter promised to notify the group when the portal for documentation would open. However, he said no updates have followed.
“We’ve made several efforts to remind INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, of the requirements of the Constitution and Electoral Act. Yet, these efforts have yielded nothing,” he said. “The Commission was supposed to respond within 90 days, but that period has long passed.”
He accused some APC loyalists within INEC of trying to sabotage TNN’s registration. According to him, these individuals fear the rising influence of TNN and want to block its participation in the 2027 elections.
“They are afraid of what we represent,” he said. “They want to start rigging the 2027 election now by keeping us out.”
TNN urged INEC to resist pressure and act in line with the law. Dr. Shaibu warned that Nigerians are closely watching how the Commission handles the issue. He stressed that the credibility of the 2027 elections could be at stake.
“With tensions already rising ahead of 2027, INEC must not worsen the situation,” he said.
He called on the Commission to follow its own guidelines and the Nigerian Constitution. This, he explained, would allow TNN to register legally and contest elections at all levels, from local councils to the national stage.
Meanwhile, TNN appealed to its supporters to stay calm. The group acknowledged the frustration among members but asked for patience.
“We know many of our supporters are angry over the delays and what appears to be manipulation. But we urge everyone to remain peaceful,” Dr. Shaibu said.
TNN reaffirmed its commitment to legal processes. It also expressed readiness to present its manifesto once the registration is approved. “Our presence is already nationwide,” he added. “We just need the legal platform to engage the electorate.”
