Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has dismissed reports claiming he is in the race for the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume described the report as false and a distraction.
“The attention of the SGF has been drawn to a publication suggesting he is jostling for the APC chairmanship,” the statement read. “This claim is entirely fabricated and designed to distract him from his critical responsibilities.”
Akume, a former Benue State governor, said he is not lobbying for any party position. He stressed that his focus remains on delivering President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“I am not in a hurry to abandon my responsibility. I can’t be in a race I am not interested in,” he said.
He added that there are many credible individuals in the North-Central who can lead the APC if the party zones the position there but insisted his priority is national development.
“Everything I have become is by God’s grace and the support of people like President Tinubu. I am focused on ensuring Nigerians benefit from true democracy dividends,” he stated.
Akume urged the media to verify sensitive political claims before publication to avoid heating up the polity.
