Nigerian-American singer and actor, Rotimi, has revealed how his transition from music to acting was born out of financial struggles and divine intervention.

Speaking during an interview on CNN’s African Voices Changemakers, Rotimi shared how his rise to fame began when music failed to provide a breakthrough, despite his growing popularity in Chicago.

“I was a struggling artiste who was big in Chicago for music but had no money,” he told CNN’s Larry Madowo. “My manager at the time said I was a natural in front of the camera and encouraged me to try acting.”

With no resume or acting coach willing to train him, Rotimi described landing his first role as nothing short of “the grace of God.” That opportunity came in the political drama Boss, where he starred alongside Kelsey Grammer—his breakout role.

Though he has since featured in major productions like Power, Divergent, Black Nativity, and Battle Creek, Rotimi insists music remains his first love.

“Love Somebody is probably my favourite song I’ve done,” he said. “It’s like a conversation with God, reminding you that love is simple and everything you want is right there.”

In 2024, he dropped a double album titled In My Heart In My Veins, blending Afrobeats and R&B. “We wanted to show both sides of who I am,” he explained.

However, his plans for a 30-city tour were put on hold due to medical advice concerning his throat. “It’s tough, but sometimes you have to trust God and understand there’s a reason,” he said.

Now more spiritually grounded, Rotimi said he’s learning to embrace life with purpose and joy. “I used to say I want this in five years. Now I just want to be happy and full of joy.”

Rotimi is married to Tanzanian singer Vanessa Mdee and was signed to 50 Cent’s G-Unit Records in 2015.
