Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has reaffirmed that the Ondo State government remains neutral in the ongoing chieftaincy dispute in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area. The governor made this statement while presenting the Staff of Office to the newly installed Alale of Akungba-Akoko, Oba Isiaka Oseni Adu, on Saturday. Moreover, he stressed that the government does not favor any ruling house.
Governor Aiyedatiwa explained that presenting the Staff of Office was not an endorsement of one faction over another. Instead, it was a step to foster reconciliation within the Ole Ruling House. He urged the Olugbade Ruling House to exercise patience. He noted, “This action does not reflect any government preference. Rather, it ensures peace and stability in the Akungba community.”
Decades-Long Chieftaincy Dispute
Akungba-Akoko has faced legal battles over traditional leadership for decades. Although it was the Olugbade Ruling House’s turn to produce the next monarch after the passing of Oba Sunday Adeyeye Ajimo in March 2025, the government had to follow court rulings validating Oba Adu’s claim.
Governor Aiyedatiwa described the recognition of Oba Adu as the culmination of a long struggle for justice and communal harmony. Therefore, he stated:
“It is logical to allow His Royal Majesty, Oba Isiaka Oseni Adu, who has obtained favorable judgments at all judicial levels, to enjoy the benefits of his legal victory in the interest of fairness, equity, and justice.”
The governor congratulated the new monarch, urging him to serve the community. He added, “Kabiyesi, you are now a father to all. Your role is to strengthen unity and peace, not to target perceived opponents.”
Development and Infrastructure Highlights
During the ceremony, Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted his administration’s ongoing projects in the region:
The Akungba–Ikare Road reconstruction into a dual carriageway.
Flood mitigation measures along key routes.
Relocation of roadside traders to Atiba Market for safety.
In addition, he reassured residents about government efforts to maintain security. He emphasized strengthening the Amotekun Corps and other security agencies to protect lives and property.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, commended the governor for his visionary leadership and adherence to due process in resolving the long-standing dispute.
Similarly, Hon. Ayo Ajana, Chairman of Akoko South West Local Government, described the event as a new beginning for Akungba. He appreciated the governor for approving key infrastructure projects, including the dual carriageway and 5 km roads across all local government areas.
Alale of Akungba-Akoko Pledges Unity and Development
Oba Isiaka Oseni Adu expressed deep gratitude to God and the Ondo State government for making his installation possible. He described the day as historic, noting that it marked the fruition of the Agure royal family’s aspiration, which began in 1951.
He pledged, “I am committed to promoting unity and development in the community throughout my reign. I am equally grateful to the Executive Governor for upholding the Supreme Court judgment on the Alale chieftaincy matter, which enabled my installation.”
