Social media has been buzzing with reports that ace comedian Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, popularly known as Okey Bakassi, has been crowned the traditional ruler of his hometown in Imo State.
While many find the news amusing, it marks yet another evolution in the comedian’s remarkable journey, from cracking jokes on stage to holding public office as a Senior Special Adviser on Entertainment to former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim, and now, assuming a royal title.
A social media user, Teddy Nelson, captured the sentiment perfectly: “His greatness is unstoppable.” Indeed, Okey Bakassi continues to break boundaries.
With this coronation, Okechukwu Onyegbule becomes only the second person in history to receive the revered “Okwe” title in his community, Umuihuocha Obohia Autonomous Community in Ahiazu Mbaise, a place known for its deep-rooted cultural heritage and unity.
His transition into traditional leadership signals a shift from the entertainment world, where he has thrived for over two decades. For those who followed his comedy career, especially his iconic partnership with Julius ‘de Genius’ Agwu during the early 2000s, this new chapter may seem surreal.
“I remember interviewing both of them back then in Festac. They couldn’t answer a single question without lacing it with humor. I laughed so hard, I cried,” recalls one journalist.
Now bearing the title His Royal Highness, Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, OKWE II, many wonder whether the royal palace will echo with laughter. A Facebook user, Markson Na’ambo, joked, “The people go laugh tire. I pray and hope they take him seriously.” Another, Eruore Dickson, commented, “This is really a Nollywood movie playing in that community now.”
While the crown brings new responsibilities, it’s hard to imagine a reign completely devoid of Okey Bakassi’s trademark humor. As the saying goes, the rain cannot wash the spots off a leopard.
Royal or not, the laughter may just continue, this time, from the throne.
