A fire outbreak has reportedly engulfed the old terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, a facility currently undergoing a multibillion-naira renovation.
As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the cause and extent of the fire were still sketchy.
The affected terminal is part of ongoing upgrade works to modernise the airport’s infrastructure.
Emergency responders were reported to have arrived at the scene, although officials had yet to issue a formal statement on the incident.
The development comes nearly two years after a fire incident was recorded at the international wing of the same airport.
On September 6, 2023, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria disclosed that a suspected electrical spark at the baggage hall ceiling caused a smoke incident at Terminal 1 of the airport.
According to the authority, the source of the smoke was traced to a burning lithium-ion battery installation in the basement.
Further updates are expected as authorities assess the situation at the old terminal.
In other news, residents of the Woro community in the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have accused Nigerian Army personnel deployed after a deadly terrorist attack of failing to pursue suspected attackers into nearby forests.
Instead, the residents alleged that soldiers mounted roadblocks within the community, where they harass and extort motorists.
The accusations follow a coordinated attack by suspected Boko Haram terrorists weeks ago that reportedly left at least 162 villagers dead, plunging surrounding communities into fear.
A resident of Woro told SaharaReporters that soldiers remained within the town rather than moving into the forests where the attackers were believed to be hiding.
