Fan Violence Erupts in Katsina as Player’s Throat Slashed During NPFL Clash

Tension gripped the Katsina Township Stadium on Saturday after a violent attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham, during a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) fixture against Katsina United.

The incident occurred moments after Barau’s Orji Kalu netted a 69th-minute equaliser, levelling the score at 1-1. The goal, however, enraged some home supporters, sparking chaos in the stands and on the pitch.

According to reports, Abraham was assaulted and left with a deep cut on his neck by furious Katsina United fans. A graphic image circulating online showed the midfielder bleeding heavily as officials and teammates rushed to his aid.

Barau FC confirmed the attack via its official X handle, posting:

“70’ The match is temporarily halted following an attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC.”

The match was temporarily suspended as security personnel intervened to restore order. At press time, neither the NPFL management nor Katsina United had issued an official statement regarding the assault.

The disturbing incident has reignited concerns about inadequate security and escalating fan violence in Nigerian football. Stakeholders are calling for swift disciplinary action against the culprits and the host club.

This attack comes barely a month after a similar outbreak of violence at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, where angry Kano Pillars supporters invaded the pitch following a late equaliser by Shooting Stars (3SC) of Ibadan.

That incident prompted the NPFL to sanction Kano Pillars with a ₦9.5 million fine, a deduction of three points and goals, and an indefinite ban on their home ground.

The Katsina attack is now adding to growing fears that poor crowd control and weak enforcement of league rules could endanger players and tarnish the image of Nigerian football.
