In a surprising twist before the 2027 general elections, loyalists of former President Muhammadu Buhari have pledged support for ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar. This move highlights growing cracks within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Naija News reports that the endorsement came during a private meeting in Abuja. State chairmen of the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Buhari’s first political platform, gathered at Atiku’s residence to chart a new course.
Atiku, who is pushing to build a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), welcomed the delegation. He also promised to work with them in reshaping Nigeria’s political future.
Meanwhile, the CPC bloc, often seen as Buhari’s strongest base, accused the current administration of betraying the coalition’s founding ideals. These principles, they argued, helped sweep APC to power in 2015.
According to Vanguard, one leader told Atiku:
“Bring it out, make it visible. Politics does not operate in the corner; bring your politics out. That is essentially what we are here to emphasise.
“We are the true followers of Buhari, and we are here today, Sir. When this coalition started, we identified early with the party we wanted. My leader, I assure you of our loyalty. The CPC bloc is intact. President Buhari left an unprecedented mark in Nigeria’s history, and we will not allow it to fade.
“We are now ready to merge into the new political platform God has chosen for us, with you as leader, the ADC.”
Notably, the group’s open allegiance to Atiku has intensified tensions within APC. Analysts believe this shift could alter political calculations before 2027, especially in the North, where Buhari still enjoys deep grassroots support.
Another CPC leader compared Buhari’s era with the current government. He argued that today’s administration has strayed from the movement’s values.
“You see me, I don’t need to tell you I’m CPC. If you see former Attorney-General Malami, former Kaduna Governor El-Rufai, and others who worked closely with Buhari, you don’t need to be told they are CPC. Then, compare this with the faces in power today,” he said.
Atiku Welcomes Alliance
In his response, Atiku described the move as a step toward building a formidable front capable of challenging APC’s dominance.
“I am delighted to receive you today. This meeting represents a continuation of your journey and your struggles. I believe that with your support, we can turn this journey into success.
“We will also form a government that reflects inclusivity and service to the people. It will be responsive to citizens’ needs and committed to peace and unity across Nigeria,” Atiku stated.
In addition, he urged the CPC bloc to mobilise supporters for the ongoing voter registration exercise. He stressed that mass participation will be crucial in shaping the 2027 outcome.
Atiku concluded that the ADC remains a people-driven movement. Therefore, he encouraged CPC loyalists to drive voter registration, which he described as the key to the coalition’s success.
