Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, says the opposition party will regain power in 2027 despite defections to the ruling APC.
During a media briefing on Saturday in Abuja, Mohammed, who also chairs the PDP National Convention Publicity and Communication Subcommittee, said the party is stabilising its ranks and rebuilding public trust.
He expressed concern about governors leaving for the APC but emphasised that leadership requires effort and persistence. “Party leaders are working behind the scenes to keep members united,” he said.
Mohammed accused the APC-led federal government of using its resources to weaken opposition parties and push Nigeria toward a one-party system. “They apply coercion and aim to dominate the political space,” he added.
He stressed that defections will not diminish the PDP’s grassroots support. “Those who left face resistance because most grassroots members remain loyal. Bauchi State shows no signs of division, and I am staying put,” he noted.
Acknowledging the possibility of more defections among Bauchi lawmakers, Mohammed reassured that the party structure remains strong. “Even today, reports claim one of my senators plans to leave. Some are being influenced, but the state remains PDP. Nigerians want change and view PDP as the vehicle for that change,” he said.
Mohammed maintained that the PDP remains the only credible platform capable of national rebuilding. “Most measurable federal achievements occurred under PDP administrations. By God’s grace, if we stand firm, we will deliver. Some governors, including myself, were underestimated, yet we succeeded. That pattern will repeat in 2027,” he said.
He explained that party leaders are resolving disputes and legal challenges ahead of the PDP convention. “Many litigations aim to undermine us, but the PDP has no factions. Compared to other parties, we are better organised with a single National Chairman, Secretary, and Publicity Secretary,” Mohammed said.
Regarding speculations about defections, he confirmed that Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah had not made any decision to leave. “Governor Mbah has not communicated his position. It remains a personal decision,” he explained.
Mohammed also dismissed claims that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara had left the party. “He remains loyal and has weathered many challenges. He manages the situation well,” he said.
On speculation linking former President Goodluck Jonathan to a 2027 presidential project, Mohammed welcomed prominent figures into the PDP. “Big names joining the PDP make us happy. We are united and will present leadership that Nigerians can trust for Aso Rock, inshallah,” he said.
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the party and optimism for 2027. “If someone leaves, like a bird, they go and may return. We do our best, but some things lie beyond our control,” he added.
