Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly urged Real Madrid to strengthen their midfield this summer. With Martin Zubimendi expected to join Arsenal, the coach recommended two Premier League stars, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, as possible alternatives.
Although many expect Ancelotti to leave for the Brazil job at the end of the season, he still plays a key role in Madrid’s transfer plans. His influence remains strong as the club prepares for a major summer reshuffle.
Madrid had hoped to sign Zubimendi, but reports suggest he is set to join Arsenal. Sources claim it is “widely accepted” that the Real Sociedad midfielder will move to the Emirates.
Tonali’s Rise and Madrid’s Interest
Sandro Tonali, who won the 2021–22 Serie A title with AC Milan, has drawn attention from both Real Madrid and Manchester City. Since joining Newcastle in 2023, he has impressed despite serving a 10-month ban for gambling breaches.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe praised Tonali as “exceptional” after his arrival. This season, Tonali has helped Newcastle win the Carabao Cup and stay in the race for a top-five Premier League finish.
According to The Telegraph, Tonali wants to remain at Newcastle long-term. He has dismissed Italian media reports linking him with a return to Serie A, including interest from Juventus.
Madrid Set Sights on William Saliba
Real Madrid are also preparing to strengthen their defence. They have identified Arsenal’s William Saliba as their top target. According to Marca, the club has made quiet inquiries and views him as their ideal choice.
Florentino Perez is reportedly ready to lead the push for Saliba. The Madrid president is prepared to step in and move negotiations forward.
However, Arsenal are unlikely to sell. Saliba has become one of the best centre-backs in the world and a key player for Mikel Arteta. He starts whenever fit and plays a central role in Arsenal’s success.
Arsenal are focused on winning the Champions League and will face Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals. With Gabriel also linked to a move to Saudi Arabia, it seems unlikely the club will allow both of their starting centre-backs to leave this summer.
