Former Rivers State governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that he would defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election if he secures the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket. He pledged to eradicate corruption in Nigeria within his first month in office or resign.
Speaking during an X Space session titled Weekend Politics, Amaechi promised sweeping reforms, including overhauling the constitution and replacing the current indigeneship system with citizenship-based rights.
“If I do not end corruption in Nigeria within one month, I will tender my resignation,” Amaechi stated.
Vows to Stop Public Funds Mismanagement
Amaechi accused powerful individuals of regularly visiting the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to siphon public funds. According to him, these resources, if managed properly, could address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
On fuel subsidy, he said he would not reverse its removal but would redirect the savings directly to ordinary Nigerians rather than to political elites.
Electoral Integrity and Campaign Promise to Defeat Tinubu
Amaechi stressed that he had never participated in election rigging, rejecting all invitations to join APC election planning committees.
“I know Tinubu’s strengths and weaknesses. If given the ADC ticket, I will defeat him,” he said. He further pledged to end electoral malpractice and ensure transparent elections if elected president.
Stance on Accountability and 2023 Rivers Election
The former minister of transportation challenged anyone to present evidence linking him to election rigging, promising to apologise if proven guilty.
Amaechi also admitted that Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, won in Rivers State during the 2023 elections, although the official results differed.
“I would agree to an extent that Peter Obi won in Rivers State, but the result announced was different. How it happened, I have no idea,” he remarked.
