President Bola Tinubu has placed a high priority on delivering clean water to Abuja’s satellite towns, according to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Wike disclosed this on Friday during an inspection of ongoing projects in Abuja. He said the recent trip to China on May 1 was part of efforts to finalise a water supply project with the China Geo-Engineering Corporation Overseas Construction (CGCOC) Group.
“We have signed an MoU with CGCOC to provide water to the satellite towns. The visit was a follow-up to push the project forward,” Wike said.
He noted that the Tinubu administration had committed to delivering the Abuja City Water Supply Project in its second year, with part of the delivery along Airport Road. However, Tinubu also directed that the clean water supply must extend to satellite towns.
“This is a critical project for Mr President. He has included funding for it in the National Budget and we have done the same in our Statutory Budget, which is now before the National Assembly,” the minister explained.
The project will begin in Bwari, Karu, and parts of Kubwa, with the procurement process already at the Bureau of Public Procurement. CGC, the company handling the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project, will also execute this initiative.
Wike applauded President Tinubu for supporting infrastructure and social development across the FCT, spanning roads, education, and healthcare.
He revealed that 85% of the FCT’s Statutory Budget would be channelled toward completing existing projects, while only 15% would go to new ones.
“Education and healthcare are part of these ongoing efforts. About N140 billion is allocated to capital projects in the education sector alone,” he added.
“Our goal is not to award new projects but to revive and complete abandoned ones so they serve the people.”
