President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cancelled his planned visit to Kaduna. He will instead travel to Benue State on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, to address the recent wave of killings in the region.
His media adviser, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the change in a statement released on Wednesday. He said the president shifted focus to Benue to engage with local leaders and find lasting solutions to the violence.
“President Tinubu will visit Benue to address the ongoing crisis affecting communities across the state,” Onanuga said.
Over the weekend, suspected herdsmen attacked Yelewata community, killing more than 100 residents. The massacre sparked outrage across Nigeria and triggered protests by angry youths in Benue on Sunday.
Reacting to the attack, Tinubu condemned the killings in a statement released Sunday night. He described the incident as tragic and unacceptable, promising swift action.
To prepare for the visit, Tinubu ordered the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and other top security officials to relocate to Benue. Egbetokun arrived on Monday, following the president’s directive.
During his visit, Tinubu will meet with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, politicians, and security stakeholders. He aims to hear directly from those affected and outline the government’s plans for peace and justice.
The president hopes to end years of bloodshed in Benue and rebuild trust between the government and local communities.
