President Bola Tinubu has approved a second five-year tenure for Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The announcement was made on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. Marwa first took office in January 2021 after his appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari. Before that, he led the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse between 2018 and 2020.

With the renewal of his mandate, the former military officer from Adamawa State will lead the NDLEA until 2031.

Marwa previously served as military governor of Lagos and Borno States. He trained at the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy, where he was later appointed Academic Registrar.

His military career includes roles as Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to then Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Theophilus Danjuma, Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC, and Defence Adviser to Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

He also earned a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.

Marwa’s leadership at the NDLEA has delivered major results, including the arrest of more than 73,000 suspected traffickers and the seizure of over 15 million kilogrammes of illicit drugs. The agency has also intensified public campaigns against drug abuse across the country.

“Your reappointment is a vote of confidence in your efforts to rid our country of drug trafficking and drug abuse. I urge you to remain steadfast in confronting those who peddle hard drugs and target our youth,” President Tinubu said.
