President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military leader, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), on his 84th birthday.
The statement, issued in Abuja on Sunday by Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, conveyed warm wishes to Babangida, his family, and close associates.
Praise for Babangida’s Contributions
Tinubu applauded Babangida’s role in shaping Nigeria’s growth. He described the general’s eight-year leadership as a time of bold reforms and national transformation.
He also reflected on Babangida’s military career. His service included roles as an instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy, commander of the Armoured Corps, and Chief of Army Staff.
Landmark Achievements During His Tenure
According to Tinubu, Babangida’s government pursued ambitious reforms and invested heavily in infrastructure. The Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos was cited as a major achievement.
The president also praised Babangida’s economic liberalisation policies. These opened Nigeria’s economy to private investment and foreign participation, stimulating growth.
Tinubu highlighted the creation of key security institutions during Babangida’s rule. They include the State Security Service (SSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
He also mentioned Babangida’s state creation policy and the relocation of Nigeria’s capital from Lagos to Abuja. Both decisions continue to shape governance today.
Tinubu’s Final Message
Tinubu thanked Babangida for his lifelong service and sacrifices. He prayed for his continued good health, renewed strength, and more years of meaningful living.
