President Bola Tinubu has appointed Louis Odion and Ummusalma Isiyaku Rabiu as executive commissioners of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
The announcement came through Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, in a statement released on Wednesday.

Odion, from Edo State, will serve as Executive Commissioner, Operations, while Ummusalma, from Kano State, will take the role of Executive Commissioner, Corporate Services.
The Senate will review and confirm their appointments in line with the FCCPC Act, 2018. Therefore, the process will follow due legislative procedure.

FCCPC’s Role in Protecting Consumers

The appointments aim to strengthen the Commission’s work in protecting consumer rights and ensuring fair market practices in Nigeria.

In addition, the FCCPC regulates business operations to prevent monopolies, market dominance, and unfair trade.

Furthermore, it investigates anti-competitive practices such as price fixing, bid rigging, and market allocation. As a result, when violations occur, the Commission takes legal action to maintain a fair and competitive economy.

Profile of Louis Odion

Louis Odion is a veteran journalist with decades of experience in Nigeria’s media industry.
Notably, he served as Senior Technical Assistant on Media to former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. In 2014, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) named him a Fellow in recognition of his professional achievements.

From 2011 to 2015, Odion worked as Commissioner for Information in Edo State under Adams Oshiomhole.

In addition, he holds a Master’s degree in Modern War Studies from the University of Buckingham, United Kingdom, and another in International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos.

Profile of Ummusalma Isiyaku Rabiu

Ummusalma Isiyaku Rabiu, 35, is the daughter of the late Isiyaku Rabiu, a renowned Nigerian businessman.
She is the founder of the USIR Foundation, which supports education, skill development, and humanitarian projects.

Moreover, she leads Usir Ricemill Nigeria Limited as Chief Executive Officer.

Her educational background includes a degree in Business Administration. Additionally, she has been active in grassroots politics, advocating for youth and women’s involvement in community development and governance.

Public Expectations for the New Appointees

If confirmed, the appointees are expected to inject new ideas and energy into the FCCPC’s operations.

Consequently, stakeholders believe their backgrounds in governance, media, business, and social work will help the Commission deliver stronger results.

The administration sees this move as a strategic step toward creating a competitive and transparent marketplace that benefits all Nigerians.

Ultimately, these appointments signal a renewed focus on accountability and fairness in Nigeria’s business environment.
