…Pastor condemns gospel singers for demanding payment
Renowned Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has strongly criticized popular pastor Lazarus Femi for his remarks condemning gospel artistes who charge fees to minister in churches.
In a viral video, Pastor Femi argued that many gospel singers have turned their ministry into mere performances, warning that they will eventually fade away. He further stated that those concerned about paying their crew members lack faith in God’s provision and are distant from His presence.
Dakolo Defends Gospel Artistes: ‘They Deserve Fair Pay’
Reacting in the comment section of an Instagram blog, Dakolo dismissed the pastor’s comments as misleading, emphasizing that gospel singers deserve fair compensation for their work.
“My dear Christians, a quote can sound deep yet be untrue. Just like everyone else, you deserve the best things in life. Studio sessions, production, and promotion all cost money. Gospel ministers have families to feed and bills to pay,” Dakolo wrote.
He challenged those who refuse to pay gospel artistes to instead invest in their church musicians and compensate them adequately. “If you can’t pay, use your church choir and pay them what you would have given a guest artist. This gaslighting must stop. Gospel ministers are not beggars,” he added.
Churches Must Value and Support Their Musicians
Dakolo also pointed out the double standards in churches, noting that large sums are spent on architects for grand church buildings and promotions for major events, yet some pastors expect musicians to work for free.
“Ministry needs music, and music needs ministry. It takes years of dedication to become an elite musician. Invest in your church singers and pay them well,” he urged.
The debate over whether gospel singers should charge for their services has been ongoing in religious circles, with Dakolo’s comments reigniting the conversation about valuing artistry in ministry.
