Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has lashed out at leaders of the new opposition coalition, accusing them of pursuing power only for selfish reasons.
Speaking during a thanksgiving service in Abuja on Sunday, Wike described them as political opportunists without any genuine ideology or vision for Nigeria’s progress.
“These are the same people claiming they want to rescue Nigerians,” Wike said. “You’re a minister for interior, and it takes weeks or months for citizens to get international passports. But your own son gets his within hours. Yet you come to tell us Nigerians are angry. Nigerians are angry with you.”
He criticised politicians who jump from party to party, saying they have no stable principles.
“In 1999 you’re in this party, 2006 another party, 2014 another, 2019 you move again, and by 2025 you’re somewhere else. Who are you rescuing? You’re rescuing your stomach, not Nigeria.”
Wike also attacked a former governor for failing to conduct local government elections during his eight years in office, questioning his democratic values.
“For eight years, he never conducted local government elections and Nigerians were not angry?”
He dismissed the coalition’s claims of challenging the current administration, saying:
“They say they formed coalition for 18 months because they can’t stay out of power. Unfortunately, they have stayed out. They will not come back.”
Wike concluded by reaffirming his support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“If Tinubu’s government will not work, I will not support. But if it will work, I will support,” he said.
