Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff to President Donald Trump, sparked outrage after criticizing a federal judge who blocked Trump’s National Guard deployment in Portland, Oregon.
Judge Immergut Rules Against Trump’s Order
Accprding to MEDIA ITE, U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut, appointed by Trump, struck down the order, calling it unconstitutional.
“This is a nation of constitutional law, not martial law,” she wrote. The judge warned that the president’s action could blur the line between civilian and military authority.
Miller Defends the President’s Decision
Shortly after the ruling, Miller reacted online, calling the judgment “legal insurrection.”
He argued that Trump, as commander-in-chief, had full authority to deploy troops. According to him, the move was vital to stop what he described as “organized terrorist attacks” against federal officers in Portland.
“The President is the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, not an Oregon judge,” he wrote. “The deployment of troops is essential to protect our laws and the Republic.”
Earlier that day, Miller posted another statement accusing the political left of promoting violence.
“There is a growing movement of leftwing terrorism in this country,” he claimed. “It is organized, funded, and protected by far-left judges and prosecutors.”
His comments drew sharp criticism from across the political spectrum.
Conservative writer David French called them “incredibly dangerous,” warning that such language could put the judge at risk.
Likewise, The Atlantic’s Derek Thompson described Miller’s remarks as “authoritarian” and “disgusting.” He said they undermined the judicial system and promoted autocratic tendencies.
California Governor Gavin Newsom joined the backlash, urging Trump to fire Miller.
“A senior White House official accusing a federal judge of ‘insurrection’ is reckless,” Newsom said. “It’s authoritarian propaganda, plain and simple. Stephen Miller should be fired.”
White House Yet to Respond
As of now, the White House has not commented on the controversy surrounding Miller’s remarks.
