Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that the Nigerian government is determined not to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, alive.

Sowore made the claim in a Facebook post on Wednesday, accusing the authorities of deliberately prolonging Kanu’s detention to prevent the collapse of what he described as “the lies sustaining their power.”

According to him, the government is united in a mission to ensure Kanu does not regain his freedom, stating that, “ever since they realised their web of deceit was beginning to unravel, they have gone into overdrive.”

He further alleged that Kanu’s release would expose what he called “fraud, greed, betrayal of justice, and the destruction of truth” within the political system. “The people’s eyes have opened,” Sowore added, “and fake political careers built on deceit and oppression will not survive the truth.”

Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021 after being rearrested and charged with terrorism and treason over his role in the separatist movement.

Earlier this week, Sowore led a protest in Abuja demanding Kanu’s immediate release. Reports indicate that several protesters, including Kanu’s brother and lawyer, were arrested and remanded in Kuje Prison following the demonstration.
