Nigerian singer Skales has shared his thoughts on the struggles of being an independent artist. He explained how his faith in God has become a pillar of support throughout this phase of his career. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Skales expressed the challenges he faces while navigating the music industry on his own.
Faith as His Guiding Light
Skales admitted that trusting God isn’t always easy but emphasized how his faith keeps him grounded. “The same God wey open this door… go guide me through. It’s easier said than done,” he wrote. Skales remains confident that divine guidance will lead him through this phase, stating that his faith, not a major label, is his strongest support. He reassured fans, “Na independent artist I be, no major backing but the majorest backing which is my Lord and Savior… we dey go higher my fans, make una no worry.”
A Glance at His Time with E.M.E
Before his independent journey, Skales was part of Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E), founded by Banky W. While signed to the label, Skales released hit songs like “Mukulu” and “Keresimesi,” produced by Sarz. These tracks solidified his place in the Nigerian music scene. He also contributed to Empire Mates State of Mind, the label’s 2012 album, and collaborated with top artists. Skales joined E.M.E acts on their U.S. tour and supported Wizkid in London that same year.
However, after his four-year contract ended in February 2014, Skales made the decision to leave E.M.E. He chose to pursue an independent path and focus on his own vision.
Launching OHK Music
After parting ways with E.M.E, Skales founded his own record label, OHK Music. He signed producer Drey Beatz and released his own music, including the hit single “Shake Body.” Despite the challenges of being without a major label, Skales has continued to grow as an artist.
Skales remains confident that his unwavering faith, along with the support of his fans, will help him overcome obstacles. His journey proves that with persistence and faith, independence can lead to success.
