Rangers manager Russell Martin has commended Cyriel Dessers for his exceptional attitude and work ethic, encouraging other underperforming squad members to follow the Nigerian striker’s lead.
Following Rangers’ 1-1 draw in their Scottish Premiership opener against Motherwell, Martin disclosed that Dessers is the only player to have received concrete transfer interest this summer. Despite the ongoing speculation, the forward has continued to give his best whenever called upon.
Motherwell responded to an early goal from James Tavernier with a late equaliser from Emmanuel Longelo, earning a share of the spoils in a spirited encounter.
Dessers, who has drawn interest from Greek side AEK Athens and Dutch outfit Feyenoord, was introduced in the 63rd minute. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, his professionalism has stood out.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Martin said:
“I told some of the players in the dressing room that Cyriel is the only one we’ve received a genuine offer for—and yet, he comes on and works incredibly hard, just like he did on Wednesday night. Others should look at him and follow that example.”
Dessers, Rangers’ top scorer last season with 29 goals in 55 appearances, still has two years remaining on his contract.
Rangers will next face FC Viktoria Plzeň on Tuesday, August 5, in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.
