Planned political rallies in support of Governor Douye Diri and former Governor Aminu Tambuwal were unexpectedly shelved over the weekend in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, sparking curiosity and raising concerns over rising political tensions in the state.

The Pro-Diri rally, initiated by the Izon Keme-Ama Assembly, was initially scheduled to take place at the Tombia Roundabout on Saturday. However, the event was postponed without a new date announced. Similarly, another group, the New Democrats, which had declared intentions to hold a simultaneous rally at the same venue, also failed to show up.

Observers noted a conspicuous absence of activity at the rally site, which was heavily guarded by personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Bayelsa’s Operation Doo Akpo, hinting at underlying security concerns.

Security Presence, But No Crowd

Despite expectations of large gatherings, the Tombia Roundabout, the proposed venue for both rallies, remained deserted throughout Saturday. Security operatives, including NSCDC officials and local task force agents, maintained a strong presence around the area, suggesting preemptive measures against possible unrest.

New Associates Reschedule Mega Rally to April 26

Meanwhile, the New Associates, a political group led by George Turnah, had earlier announced the postponement of their rally meant to appreciate President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Originally slated for April 12, the event was rescheduled to April 26 following appeals from Ijaw community leaders seeking to avoid political clashes.

Warning Issued Over Potential Date Clash

In a stern message, Turnah warned that if any other group attempts to stage a rally on the new date or at the same venue, the New Associates would have no choice but to proceed with their event. He emphasized that any resulting disturbances should be blamed on those attempting to sabotage the peaceful
