The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed speculation suggesting that Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, might return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), calling such a move politically unwise.
ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi made the statement during an interview on Prime Time, a current affairs programme on Arise Television. Abdullahi, a former PDP chieftain and ex-Minister of Youth and Sports, affirmed Obi’s continued relevance in the opposition coalition being spearheaded by the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Let me be clear: Peter Obi is part of the coalition,” Abdullahi said. “No matter what anyone else may claim. Interestingly, the PDP only began to stir after ADC’s active involvement. But everyone knows that the PDP’s influence is largely curtailed by the ruling party. Peter Obi, more than anyone, understands the political risk of returning to the PDP.”
Jerry Gana Describes Obi as a Beacon of Hope
Abdullahi’s remarks come on the heels of recent commendation from Professor Jerry Gana, a founding member of the PDP and former Minister of Information, who praised Obi as one of Nigeria’s most credible and visionary leaders.
In an interview with Africa Independent Television (AIT), Gana referred to Obi as “a symbol of hope” and a vital force in the push for accountable governance.
“Peter Obi is one of the most outstanding leaders this country has produced,” Gana said. “He is disciplined, fiscally responsible, and passionately committed to Nigeria’s development. He represents the kind of leadership needed to secure the future of our democracy.”
Gana also emphasized the need for a united and broad-based opposition, stressing that no single party can unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 without collective effort from credible political actors.
