Aisha Yesufu, co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls movement, has revealed that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, assured her he would serve only one term if elected president.
Reacting to ongoing public debates about Obi’s sincerity regarding a single-term presidency, Yesufu took to her X platform on Sunday to reaffirm that the former Anambra State governor had privately pledged to serve just one term.
She stated that Obi had consistently maintained this position, even during the 2023 election campaign, often citing Nelson Mandela as his role model.
“I, Aisha Yesufu, can confirm that Mr. Peter Gregory Obi has always said he would serve only one term, even before the 2023 election,” she wrote.
Yesufu said she used to challenge Obi on this decision, arguing that one term would not be enough to implement meaningful change.
“I told him several times during the 2022 campaign that the people would not allow him to stop at one term,” she noted. “He would always respond by referencing Mandela, saying that if one is truly focused and determined, a single term is enough to make a difference.”
According to Aisha, Obi reaffirmed his commitment earlier this year when she sought clarity before speaking on the matter publicly.
“I asked him again if he truly meant what he said about doing just one term,” she explained. “Many people from the North had expressed concern that supporting Peter Obi could extend the South’s time in power by another four years.”
She emphasized that she needed Obi’s confirmation for the sake of her own integrity.
“I told him I would speak publicly about his promise and needed to be sure it was still valid. Mr. Peter Obi once again gave me his word—he would serve only one term,” she concluded.
