Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on Thursday. The meeting is viewed as part of wider political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi announced the meeting on his official X handle. He described Jonathan as an “elder brother, statesman, and leader.” He explained that their discussions focused on national issues and the state of the country.

“Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan. We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation,” Obi wrote.

Although he did not share details, the meeting has triggered speculation about possible political alignments before 2027. Jonathan’s name has appeared in PDP discussions, while Obi is seen as a rallying figure for disenchanted voters.

Jonathan, who governed Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, has increased his interventions on governance and democracy in recent months. He has been holding private talks with political leaders across party lines. Meanwhile, Obi has continued nationwide engagements since 2023, stressing the need for leadership that addresses insecurity, unemployment, and economic hardship.

Analysts believe the Abuja meeting may point to early cooperation between PDP heavyweights and Labour Party loyalists. With President Bola Tinubu consolidating power, opposition parties may require alliances to mount a credible challenge.

Although neither Jonathan nor Obi has declared presidential ambitions, their meeting adds to the growing consultations shaping Nigeria’s 2027 political race.
