Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized the Federal Government’s plan to increase politicians’ salaries. He called it insensitive and untimely amid Nigeria’s economic challenges.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) recently proposed salary increases for President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, ministers, senators, and other political leaders.

RMAFC Chairman Mohammed Shehu explained that the current salary structure, unchanged since 2008, no longer meets modern standards. He noted that the President earns N1.5 million monthly, while ministers earn less than N1 million. Shehu said that some agency heads and the Central Bank Governor earn more than these figures.

Obi Warns Against Politicians’ “Greed”

In a statement Wednesday night, Peter Obi rejected the proposal. He said it prioritizes leaders’ interests over ordinary Nigerians’ welfare.

“The recent proposal by RMAFC to increase political leaders’ salaries is causing anger. Many Nigerians question its necessity and timing,” Obi said.

He added that approving the increase during rising living costs exposes leaders’ insensitivity and greed. Obi described the plan as a “shameless grab” by politicians. He stressed that public office should be a duty, not a route to wealth.

Focus on Public Workers and Security Personnel

Obi urged the government to prioritize public workers and security personnel, particularly police officers. He noted that they remain underpaid and overworked.

“RMAFC should focus on improving the welfare of Nigerians, especially public servants who have long been neglected,” he said.

His remarks have sparked discussions on social media and among civil society groups advocating better living standards for ordinary Nigerians.
