Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has criticised the growing trend of Nigerians looking down on their fellow citizens. He described this mindset as deeply troubling.

Obi responded to recent remarks labelling some of his supporters as “street urchins” and “people of no value.” He said such comments demean citizens and undermine national unity.

“Lately, I have heard people say that those who follow Peter Obi are low-class Nigerians. Some even called them ‘street urchins’ or people of no value,” Obi said. “It is deeply unfortunate that, in today’s Nigeria, citizens demean others in this way.”

He stressed that his political journey has always focused on uplifting ordinary Nigerians rather than seeking approval from the powerful elite.

“I have never and will never look down on anyone, except to lift them up. After all, we can only rise by lifting others,” Obi said. “I have always focused my political work on standing with ordinary Nigerians, who others have silenced. Moreover, these citizens have had their resources taken by those in power, who now parade titles and accolades.”

Obi also criticised leaders who speak condescendingly about citizens struggling with poverty and hardship.

“No Nigerian is of no value. No Nigerian is a street urchin,” he said. “This reflects the sad state of our nation when ordinary Nigerians face daily challenges and are dismissed in such terms.”

He emphasised that every citizen deserves dignity, care, and opportunity. Furthermore, Obi pledged to continue working to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians through education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.

“That is why I will continue to ensure ordinary Nigerians enjoy a better life, one with access to education, quality healthcare, and opportunities to rise above poverty,” Obi said. “True leadership is not about mocking the weak; it is about lifting them up.”
