The scheduled June 30 National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has hit a major setback after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rejected the party’s official notice.

Ambassador Umar Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, had on May 30 issued a letter to INEC notifying the Commission of the NEC meeting. However, INEC declined the notice, citing a breach of its regulatory guidelines.

According to INEC, the notification failed to comply with Part 2(12)(3) of the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, which mandates that both the National Chairman and National Secretary must jointly sign and submit such notices.

Damagum’s letter, titled “Notice of 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) Meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)”, stated that the meeting would take place on Monday, June 30, 2025, at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja.

INEC’s response, dated June 13 and signed by Haliru Aminu, clearly outlined the issue:

“The notice is not in compliance with the requirement of Part 2(12)3 of the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022… Be guided.”

The electoral body further reminded the PDP of the rule requiring a 21-day notice through its dedicated portal and a hard copy via registered mail — a condition aimed at ensuring due process in party conventions and NEC meetings.

As it stands, the PDP must rectify the procedural lapse or risk having the much-anticipated NEC meeting declared invalid.
