The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River South Senatorial District has rejected the claim that the faction loyal to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, will produce the next state chairman.
Caucus Meeting in Calabar
At a caucus meeting held in Calabar on Wednesday, leaders resolved that the state chairmanship must remain within the structures already agreed upon. According to Mr. Asuquo Ekpo, the party’s state vice chairman, the gathering addressed urgent political issues affecting both the senatorial district and the state.
Rejection of Wike’s Faction Resolution
In a communiqué signed by Ekpo, the caucus strongly condemned the Abuja meeting held by Wike’s loyalists. That faction had sought to extend the tenure of the incumbent state chairman. He stressed that the Venatius Ikem-led executive had fueled divisions and conflicts within the party.
Commitment to an Inclusive Congress
The caucus reaffirmed its dedication to a transparent and inclusive state congress scheduled for September 27. It also endorsed the existing distribution of party offices in line with national and state stakeholders’ resolutions.
“The caucus is determined to present a united front at the forthcoming congress,” Ekpo said. “We cannot repeat the painful loss the party suffered in the South during the 2023 elections.”
Directive to Local Governments
Consequently, the caucus directed all local government areas in the district to nominate their most competent representatives ahead of the September 27 congress. It also pledged to maintain consultations with stakeholders to accommodate zoning adjustments if necessary.
Commendation of National Woman Leader
The caucus further commended the National Woman Leader, Mrs. Amina Bryhm, for her bold efforts to stabilize the PDP in Cross River State.
