In a bid to consolidate party unity and align governance priorities with political strategy, top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State have met behind closed doors in Akure. The high-level discussions focused on key issues affecting governance and the party’s long-term future ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting coincided with the inaugural session of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), a new body uniting some of the state’s most influential political figures. The council aims to strengthen ties between the government and the party, ensuring seamless collaboration on governance and political matters.
Governor’s Advisory Council Commences Work
The GAC, chaired by former NNPC Limited Board Chairman Pius Akinyelure, appointed former APC National Vice Chairman Isaacs Kekemeke as Secretary. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa established it as a platform for experienced APC leaders to provide policy advice and political guidance.
Saturday’s closed-door meeting came shortly after the governor hosted the APC caucus. It focused on development plans and strategies for political consolidation before a stakeholders’ parley.
Speaking after the session, Akinyelure described the deliberations as productive. He said the goal was to ensure a strong partnership between the government and the party. He stressed that open communication would help the party grow while enabling the government to succeed.
Leaders Commend Governor’s Inclusive Approach
Former APC National Vice Chairman (Southwest) Pastor Bankole Oluwajana praised Governor Aiyedatiwa for creating the GAC. He said it encouraged frank discussions and strengthened unity. He praised the governor’s willingness to welcome all party members, regardless of past political differences. Oluwajana described him as a leader for everyone in the state.
GAC Secretary Kekemeke reaffirmed that the meeting strengthened the governor’s leadership position within the party. He noted that support groups must work within the APC structure and not function as alternatives. The council, he added, is committed to ensuring both the government and the party remain stable and united.
Advisory Role in Governance
Former Senator Prof. Ajayi Boroffice explained that the GAC’s role is to provide policy and unity advice to the governor. He commended Aiyedatiwa’s achievements, including prompt salary payments, debt reduction, and avoiding new borrowings. Boroffice stressed that while the council advises, the governor holds the authority to make final decisions in the state’s best interest.
Other members, including Chief Jamiu Ekungba and Hon. Awodeyi Akinsehinwa Apata, called the GAC a unifying platform that could strengthen the APC before the next elections.
Strengthening Political Machinery
The GAC’s primary mandate is to provide strategic input on governance priorities while keeping the APC’s political structure strong and united. Although Governor Aiyedatiwa did not speak publicly after the meeting, sources said he was satisfied with the discussions and leaders’ renewed commitment to unity.
