Kenneth Okonkwo, former spokesperson for the Labour Party (LP) presidential campaign, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of manipulating the 2023 general election results.
During an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Okonkwo alleged that the votes credited to LP’s candidate, Peter Obi, did not reflect the actual results. He claimed that INEC “wrote” and “allocated” figures rather than announcing genuine votes.
Okonkwo said INEC deliberately manipulated results, especially in Lagos and Rivers States.
According to him, Peter Obi secured over a million votes in Lagos, but INEC reduced the figures.
He also claimed that INEC altered and rewrote results in Rivers State to favour the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“There is still no explanation to this day,” Okonkwo said.
“Remember, I said the results were written. The votes allocated to Obi were assigned, not counted. Check Rivers State,” he added.
When reminded that the Supreme Court had declared Tinubu and the APC winners, Okonkwo responded,
“The court isn’t saying whether they wrote the results or not. It only said we didn’t produce enough evidence. But where would you even get such evidence?”
On why the Labour Party failed to station agents at all polling units nationwide, Okonkwo said,
“That is the ideal situation. However, even the Electoral Act acknowledges that not all parties have enough resources. That’s why the law uses the word ‘may’,” he explained.
He also questioned the need for party agents if INEC operated with integrity.
“Why would you even need agents if INEC was honest and impartial? INEC received 400 billion naira to conduct elections,” Okonkwo stated.
