The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has opposed the reported expulsion of Abdulmumin Jibrin, lawmaker representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in Kano State. Party leaders described the announcement as “null and void.”
According to Politics Nigeria, the party’s National Secretary, Oginni Sunday, dismissed the report as baseless and unauthorised. He stressed that it originated from Hashim Dungurawa, a former Kano chairman already expelled from the NNPP.
NNPP Warns Against Kwankwasiyya Politics
Sunday argued that Dungurawa had no authority to issue directives on behalf of the NNPP. Moreover, he said attempts to remove a sitting lawmaker amounted to “a joke taken too far.” He referenced rulings from both the Federal Capital Territory High Court and the Abia State High Court, which confirmed the expulsion of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and his allies.
Furthermore, Sunday accused Kwankwaso’s camp of targeting Jibrin simply because he refused to join their faction. He also cautioned Governor Abba Yusuf that excessive loyalty to Kwankwaso could damage the NNPP’s chances in the 2027 Kano governorship election.
“One of the smartest ways for Governor Yusuf to secure victory in 2027 is to travel to Lagos and tender an apology to the party’s founder and leadership,” Sunday advised.
Jibrin Denies Wrongdoing
In his response, Jibrin described the expulsion claim as “a rude shock.” He explained that his interview in English and Hausa promoted the party’s values and should not attract punishment.
“I believe the contents of the interview do not justify such a heavy penalty. In addition, no invitation came for me to defend myself before any party organ. Even under military rule, an accused person faces a court-martial,” Jibrin stated.
He also denied failing to pay dues, noting that the party never issued him an invoice. Nevertheless, he expressed readiness to clear any outstanding fees once billed.
Beyond that, Jibrin criticised the NNPP’s internal structure. He argued that the party undervalues its members and ignores their political contributions.
“The party does not believe anybody has political value or deserves respect at different levels,” Jibrin added.
