The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has addressed growing concerns over its perceived silence on recent political developments, emphasizing its role as a non-partisan body committed to governance and policy matters rather than partisan conflicts.

Commitment to Unity and Collaboration

In a statement signed by its Director-General, Abdulateef Shittu, the NGF clarified that its primary objective is fostering unity and collaboration among governors across different political parties. The Forum stated that taking sides in political controversies could weaken this unity and disrupt its mission.

“The Forum wishes to clarify that it is an umbrella body for subnational governments to promote unified policy positions and collaborate with relevant stakeholders in pursuit of sustainable socioeconomic growth and the well-being of the people,” the statement read.

Lessons from Past Divisions

The NGF noted that past divisions within the body, caused by political differences, serve as a lesson in maintaining neutrality. “Taking positions on contentious partisan issues would mean a poor sense of history, just a few years after the Forum survived a fundamental division following political differences among its members,” the statement added.

Focus on Governance, Not Politics

Despite avoiding political debates, the NGF reaffirmed its commitment to addressing pressing governance issues, including wages, taxation, education, and universal healthcare. The Forum urged the public and media to understand its position, assuring that appropriate platforms exist to handle political disputes.

“The Forum is reputed for its bold positions on governance and general policy matters of profound consequences, such as wages, taxes, education, and universal healthcare, among others,” the statement emphasized.

A Call for Understanding

This clarification highlights the NGF’s focus on fostering sustainable development while steering clear of divisive political battles, reinforcing its role as a unifying body for governors nationwide.
