The National Assembly has postponed its plenary session to Tuesday, July 22, in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by Kamoru Ogunlana, Clerk to the National Assembly, on Monday in Abuja.
“In honour of his legacy and service to the nation, I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities are hereby suspended immediately until Tuesday, July 22, 2025,” the statement read.
Lawmakers were urged to adjust their schedules to enable their full participation in the burial rites and national mourning activities planned for the late president.
The National Assembly extended its heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, describing him as a leader who dedicated his life to the unity, security, and development of Nigeria. It also lauded his integrity and commitment to public service, both as a military leader and as a civilian president.
Buhari first ruled Nigeria as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985 before returning to power as a democratically elected president, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023. His tenure was marked by significant economic reforms, anti-corruption drives, and security operations against insurgency in parts of the country.
He died in a hospital in London after battling an undisclosed illness. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon by the presidency.
