Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending months of speculation about his next political move.
He announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday, October 14, during a statewide broadcast.
Mbah described his decision as strategic, saying it would connect Enugu and the South-East to the federal government in Abuja.
“Today, after deep reflection, we have decided to join the All Progressives Congress,” he said.
The governor explained that the move would help him serve Enugu better and align the state with national development goals.
He thanked the PDP for giving him the platform to contest and win the 2023 governorship election.
“Leadership demands tough choices. Sometimes, one must make bold decisions to shape their destiny,” Mbah added.
Mbah defected with members of the State Executive Council, the House of Assembly, local government chairmen, councillors, and political aides.
Last week, the APC dissolved its Enugu State Executive Committee to make room for Mbah’s team.
APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, welcomed the governor’s entry, saying it showed the party’s growing strength in the South-East.
“For ten years, Enugu has been in opposition. That changes today,” Yilwatda said.
Mbah’s defection follows similar moves by Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, who joined the APC earlier this year with their cabinets.
Despite public complaints about rising hardship under President Bola Tinubu, the APC continues to attract new members nationwide.
