The crisis rocking the Labour Party (LP) has escalated, as the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) has issued a stern warning to Abia State Governor Alex Otti and the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, threatening suspension over alleged anti-party activities.
Allegations Against Gov. Otti and Peter Obi
In a communiqué released after its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held Monday in Abuja, the party’s leadership accused both high-profile figures of actions deemed detrimental to party unity and integrity.
The meeting, presided over by LP National Secretary Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim and attended by Chairman Julius Abure, state chairpersons, and other key stakeholders, condemned Otti’s alleged moves to hold unauthorised stakeholder meetings and conduct local elections under another party’s platform.
Threat of Suspension and Party Unity at Stake
The NEC also slammed the formation of what it described as an “illegally constituted caretaker committee” during a September 2024 stakeholder meeting in Umuahi, reportedly endorsed by both Otti and Obi. The party claimed this was a clear attempt to factionalise the LP.
NEC expressed serious concern over Governor Otti’s plan to convene a separate NEC meeting on April 9, branding it a violation of the party’s constitution.
“The NEC will not hesitate to discipline Governor Otti under Article 19 of the party constitution if he proceeds with the illegal gathering,” the communique stated.
Changes in House of Representatives Leadership
Peter Obi, widely seen as the LP’s most prominent figure, was also cautioned. The NEC warned that any further “unconstitutional conduct” would not be tolerated, regardless of his stature.
In a major shake-up, the NEC announced the removal of Hon. Afam Victor Ogene as leader of the Labour Party caucus in the House of Representatives, citing ineffectiveness and failure to promote the party’s ideology. He will be replaced by Hon. Ben Etanabene.
“All financial records and contributions must be handed over to the new caucus leader,” the communique added, noting that relevant authorities will be duly informed.
Despite the turmoil, the Labour Party reiterated its commitment to “credible leadership and reforms” under Chairman Julius Abure, pledging to focus on governance, security, economy, and judiciary reforms.
