Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has revealed that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, is currently in discussions with key figures within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.
According to Lawal, several influential politicians from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ADC have been engaging with Kwankwaso to bring him into their fold ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He described Kwankwaso as a prominent political figure whose presence would strengthen any party or coalition.
“Having Kwankwaso on board would be a major advantage,” Lawal said, adding that many members of the coalition are eager to welcome him.
He explained that the ADC coalition prioritises attracting influential individuals with strong grassroots support rather than focusing on party names or platforms.
“I am aware that meetings have been held with Kwankwaso. He is welcome in the ADC coalition because he is among those with significant followings,” Lawal stated.
He added that whether Kwankwaso joins with just his supporters or brings along the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), the coalition would accept him either way.
When asked if the ADC coalition is targeting the NNPP’s party structure, Lawal clarified that their strategy is people-focused.
“The coalition is not about party platforms but about individuals joining us. We are not after logos or letterheads; it’s about the people behind them. They can come individually or in groups. They are all welcome,” he said.
Lawal noted that even if Kwankwaso does not join personally, some of his supporters may choose to align with the ADC independently. He also suggested that certain NNPP local government branches could merge with the ADC even without national approval.
He further revealed that many influential politicians from various parties are already joining the ADC quietly.
“Big names at the state level are coming into the ADC without announcing they are leaving NNPP or PDP. For example, Atiku joined the ADC without declaring that the PDP as a whole was joining,” he said.
Lawal concluded by emphasising that the coalition’s focus remains on building strength at the grassroots, where political influence is most decisive.
