Iyabo Obasanjo, an Ogun State governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has withdrawn her ambition following the emergence of Senator Solomon Adeola as the consensus candidate of the party

Iyabo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, announced the decision in a statement issued on Monday, saying the development followed the party’s caucus meeting held in Abeokuta, where Adeola was adopted as the consensus flagbearer.

She expressed appreciation to the leadership of the party at both state and national levels for the opportunity she had to participate in the nomination process.

“I congratulate him and wish him every success. I also thank the state and national leaders of our great party for the opportunity to participate in the nomination process,” she said.

She stated that her decision to step down was in line with the new political reality within the party.

“Based on these developments, I have decided to suspend my gubernatorial aspiration,” she added.

Addressing her supporters across the state, Iyabo thanked them for their loyalty and encouragement throughout her campaign journey, noting that the decision was taken with a sense of responsibility.

“To my supporters across Ogun State, I am deeply grateful for your calm, steadfast support and unwavering trust throughout this journey. Together, we move forward with patience, strength, and hope,” she said.

Senator Adeola, who represents Ogun West, was adopted as the APC consensus candidate during the strategic caucus meeting held at the party secretariat in Abeokuta.

“Today, those I considered as front-runners in Ogun West have given their consent and bought into the idea. The reason Ogun West has not been able to produce a governor until now is due to a lack of cooperation. I am proud to say that I have spoken to Hon. Biodun Akinlade and Hon. Gboyega Isiaka, and I can confirm that they are fully on board with having a single Ogun West candidate,” Governor Dapo Abiodun, the leader of the party in the state, said.

“Nothing will give me more joy than to break the 50-year-old jinx. Nothing will give me more joy than to fulfill the aspirations of my predecessors and ensure that Ogun West produces the next governor of Ogun State. On that note, permit me to unveil the person we have decided will be the next flagbearer of our great party in Ogun State, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola.”
