Thousands of admirers gathered in Milan over the weekend to honor Giorgio Armani. More than 15,000 people viewed his coffin at the Armani Group headquarters before the final farewell.

On Monday, mourners gathered in Rivalta, a village near Piacenza in northern Italy, for a private funeral. They held the service at the 14th-century Church of San Martino, where Armani’s parents also rest.

The legendary designer passed away on Thursday at the age of 91. He built one of the world’s most successful luxury fashion houses and remained admired for his timeless style.

Local residents stood by the roadside to greet the hearse. Some threw white rose petals, while others applauded as it passed.

“It is moving to know that his life ends here, where it began, in the village he loved,” said Romina Bozza, a 55-year-old resident.

Returning to His Roots

Security was tightened around the church to ensure privacy. Attendees included Pantaleo Dell’Orco, Armani’s trusted menswear designer, and his nephew Andrea Camerana.

Dell’Orco told Corriere della Sera that the massive turnout at the Milan viewing deeply touched the family. “The crowds showed us how much people loved him,” he explained.

The family will lay Armani to rest in their chapel at Rivalta, where his parents and brother already rest. Local reports say they will cremate his body and place the ashes in the chapel on Wednesday.

A Lasting Legacy

Residents of Rivalta described Armani as a man who never abandoned his roots. “Even though he became world-famous, he always remembered Rivalta,” said 26-year-old beautician Francesca Piazza.

Born in Piacenza on July 11, 1934, Armani spent most of his career in Milan. Yet, he often returned to Rivalta. Locals recall his frequent visits to Antica Locanda del Falco, a restaurant where he enjoyed the region’s tortelli pasta.

For the community, Armani was more than a fashion icon. “He was the great man from Piacenza who made us proud,” said 73-year-old Franca Benedetti.

On Monday afternoon, Armani stores across Italy closed in his honor. His minimalist yet elegant designs continue to inspire, securing his place as one of fashion’s most enduring legends.
